Always Growing: How Two CMOs Keep Learning and Building New Skills

Becoming a Chief Marketing Officer does not happen by chance. It takes years of hard work, learning and dedication. It also requires a constant desire to grow, even after reaching the C-suite.

At Women in Revenue, we celebrate women who are always learning and growing. This month, we are excited to spotlight two members who are committed to developing their skills and supporting others.

Meet Julia Stead and Lori Sutton. Both are Chief Marketing Officers and both believe growth is a continuous journey.

Julia Stead: Expanding Skills Across Teams

Julia Stead lives in Santa Barbara, California. She works remotely, often from a co-working space where she can stay connected with others.

Julia has spent 17 years in marketing and currently works as the CMO of Kindsight, a fundraising software platform. Over the past year, she has added to her experiences by stepping into a new leadership role.

“I led our entire sales organization for a couple of quarters,” Julia shared. “It was a big learning opportunity.”

This experience gave Julia valuable insights into sales leadership. It also strengthened her ability to work across departments. In addition to sales, Julia also leads the Revenue Operations team, connecting people, processes and technology across marketing, sales and customer success efforts.

Julia is not only focused on her own growth. She also believes in helping others succeed. In fact, she helped found Women in Revenue in 2019 to create a space for connection and learning.

“I love the positivity and support,” she said. “Our members have different experiences but we’re all dedicated to breaking down barriers and building community.”

In her free time, Julia enjoys swimming, running and spending time outdoors with her family. Her two young sons and goldendoodle puppy keep her days full of energy and fun.

Recently, Julia has been exploring the practice of stoicism. She focuses on being present and putting energy toward what she can control.

Lori Sutton: A Lifelong Learner Focused on Growth

Lori Sutton is the Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Global Sales at Doosan GridTech. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and often travels to San Francisco and other locations for work.

With more than 20 years of experience in sales and marketing, Lori continues to focus on growth and education.

“This past year I’ve taken advanced classes and explored new ideas through podcasts,” she shared. “I am always building on my experience.”

Lori values learning from others as well. Through new connections and conversations, she has gained insights that help her lead and grow her team.

She joined Women in Revenue in 2022 to be part of a supportive community focused on mentorship and professional development.

“My favorite part is the opportunity to mentor others while continuing to learn from members and the board,” Lori said.

When she is not working, Lori enjoys staying active. She loves kickboxing, road biking and spending time outdoors. She also enjoys traveling with her family and listening to podcasts about business strategy and fascinating trends in the world of chocolate.
